Climate Change

I do not know if you are aware of the current crisis that our planet is in. However, I can begin by informing you all that if we do not change the way we live, the environmental situation could become dire reliably soon.

This is the 21st century, yet the human race still relations on the rejected matter of ancient plants as its main source of energy. People say that money makes the world go round, but oil is what really makes the world operate. Without oil, in all its flamboyant glory, the world's economies, and militias would collapse. Can you even visualize the United States, China, Russia, or Europe without oil? Well, I can tell you that they would crumble.

It is a shame that the world does not harness the numerous renewable sources of energy that are available. Let's take a look at solar energy. The sun provides the earth with enough energy in one hour that the world consumes in a whole year. You may ask, then why does the world not use more solar energy? Well, I can tell you that one of the main reasons is its high costs. However, with new materials such as graphene that allow solar panels to be super thin and more efficient, solar energy is much cheaper than it was a few years ago, and with the amount of energy that it can provide, it will easily outweigh the cons of spending millions of dollars to switch to solar energy. I recently read an article about a plan proposed by two upcoming scientists: placing solar panels on top of roads. Imagine if the United States invested in this plan, and all of its roads were plated with solar panels. The country would be able to shut down most, if not all of its electric power plants that operate on coal, which would amount to billions of pounds of carbon that would never reach the atmosphere.

Wind energy is another viable option. There is always wind, even at night. Wind energy may not be quite as productive as solar, however wind energy can generate electricity at night; solar can not. Wind farms can produce enough energy to power whole cities, just like solar energy. Imagine if the worlds countries harnessed the power of the sun, and the power of earth's magnificent winds. This planet would be in way better shape. Perhaps we would not be facing major environmental disasters as we are today.

If one looks at the news today, one would see that there are two gigantic pieces of the Antarctic ice shelf that is breaking off. Personally, this frigtens me. You may ask, what effect would these huge ice sheets have if they moved to warmer waters and melted at an accelerated rate? Only that the ocean sea levels would rise by 7 feet or more, which means that major cities such as Dubai and Tokyo would be swamped along with the numerous tribes located around the world that live near water.

I personally want to sit down and question the worlds leaders, and ask them how more oblivious can they possibly be. They all focus on war, money, and many other trivial issues, but they fail to focus on the most important crisis that the world is currently facing. I do give little credit to President Obama, and European leaders that have implemented small programs to improve the environment, however, it is simply not enough!

We need to come together, put race, wealth, and differences as well so we can prepare for the fight of our lives, because if the environment keeps going on the same path, the human race will be facing an issue greater than ever before. However, if we come together now we can stop the environmental downfall that is occurring, fix our mistakes, and repair the planets environmental cycles that we have destroyed.

What’s the Big Deal About GMO’s?

Genetically engineered foods are in almost all processed food products in the United States. A simple reading of the label will reveal one or more of the following ingredients in each one of them: corn or corn oil, cottonseed oil, canola oil (made from rapeseed oil, a GMO product), soy and / or soybean oil, and / or high fructose corn syrup.

Genetically engineered corn and soy are used for most of the animal feed in the United States. And GMO sweet corn is now appearing in stores. There are no current federal labeling laws for GMO products, and two labeling measures in California and Washington have been defeated, in the wake of heavy spending of millions of dollars against the measures by Monsanto, Dow Chemical, Bayer, Kellogg's, and many others whose name you will see on products on your breakfast, lunch or dinner table. A member of the board of directors of McDonald's and one from Sara Lee sit on the board of directors of Monsanto.

The classified report on biological warfare in the story is fictitious (at least none has been disclosed) but the government reports cited from scientists at the FDA, EPA and USDA reporting GMOs as unsafe and calling for toxicology reports and further testing are real, having been accessed through litigation using the Freedom of Information Act, and you can read them on the Internet. Arpad Pusztai is a real scientist, who conducted the first experiments on lab rats, and which work was severely discredited until the UK government found out the real truth; that it had rushed into early approval of GMO foods and its ministers had hired Pusztai to do the study in two weeks, after already having approved GMO foods for public consumption.

Since chemical companies invented geneticly engineered seeds designed to withstand heavy sprayings of glyphosate, global use of Roundup and related weed killers has jumped to nearly 900 million pounds annually. That is due to the fact that since the crops are engineered to be resistant to Roundup, it can be sprayed on the entire field, not just on the weeds, making it much easier for farmers to manage weed kills. Glyphosate is a systemic chemical, meaning once sprayed, it travels up inside of the plants that people and animals eat and they consume the glyphosate as well as the nutrients in the plants. As more farm fields have converted to GMO crops, federal regulators at the EPA (and formerly employees of Monsanto) have quietly allowed an increase in the levels of glyphosate allowed in our food, something from which we should see tragic long term consequences.

According to Stephanie Seneff, PhD, senior research scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, glyphosate acts as a potent bacteria-killer in the gut, wiping out delicate beneficial microflora that helps protect us from disease. Harmful pathogens like Clostridium botulinum, Salmonella, and E. coli are able to survive glyphosate in the gut, but the “good bacteria” in your digestive tract, such as protective microorganisms, bacillus and lactobacillus, are killed off.

Even Monsanto knows about this. About 10 years ago, the company registered a patent for glyphosate's use as an antimicrobial agent. This damage to your digestive system can cause other problems, including “leaky gut,” where the protective lining of the gut is compromised, allowing for toxins and bacteria to enter the bloodstream. This causes the body to send off an immune response to attack the wayward bacteria, potentially sparking autoimmune diseases.

Moreover, glyphosate interfer with tryptophan, the precursor of serotonin, an important neurotransmitter linked to happiness and well-being. Low serotonin levels have been linked to suicide, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and other ailments. Not only does glyphosate hamper tryptophan production in your gut, it also lowers levels of it in plants, causing even more of a deficiency.

Virtually all of the genetically engineered (GMO) Bt corn grown in the US is treated with neonicotinoid pesticides. A 2012 study found high levels of clothianidin in pneumatic planter exhaust. In the study, it was found that the insecticide was present in the soil of unplanted fields near those planted with Bt corn and also on dandelions (a favorite of bees) growing near those fields. Once in the soil, the pesticide remains for many years, and is absorbed by any new plant life.

The Bt toxin, which was the subject of Seth's study in the story, essentially pokes “holes” in the cells of insects' stomachs, killing them, and has been found to poke holes in human cells as well. In one study, it was found in the blood of 93% of pregnant women tested, and in the blood of 80% of their unborn fetuses, which gets into the brains of the fetuses, due to the fact that there is no blood-brain barrier at that stage of development.

Peer reviewed studies are rare in the case of GMOs, as the only ones who have the desire or the budget to perform them are the same chemical companies which fund most of the scientific research. However, the few independent studies that have been done all point to the danger of GMOs.

Specificity of the association of GMO foods and specific disease processes is also supported. Multiple animal studies show significant immune dysregulation, including upregulation of cytokines associated with asthma, allergy, and inflammation. Animal studies also show altered structure and function of the liver, including altered lipid and carbohydrate metabolism as well as cellular changes that could lead to accelerated aging. Changes in the kidney, pancreas and spleen have also been documented.

A recent 2008 study links Bt corn with infertility, showing a significant decrease in offspring over time and significantly lower litter weight in mice fed Bt corn. American pig farmers have reported infertility and false pregnancies in their livestock after feeding them Bt corn. The study also found that over 400 genes were found to be expressed differently in mice fed Bt corn. These genes known to control protein synthesis and modification, cell signaling, cholesterol synthesis, and insulin regulation. Studies also show intestinal damage in animals fed GMO foods, including proliferative cell growth and disruption of the intestinal immune system.

Because of this mounting data, it is biologically plausible for genetically modified foods to cause adverse health effects in humans. In spite of this risk, the biotech industry claims that GMO foods can feed the world through production of higher crop yields. However, a recent report by the Union of Concerned Scientists reviewed 12 academic studies and indications otherwise: “The several thousand field trials over the last 20 years for genes aimed at increasing operational or intrinsic yield (of crops) indicate a significant undertaking. of these field trials have claimed in increased yield in commercialized major food / feed crops, with the exception of Bt corn. ” However, it was further stated that the increase in yields was significantly due to traditional pioneering improvements.

Therefore, because GMO foods pose a serious health risk in the areas of toxicology, allergy and immune function, reproductive health, and metabolic, physiologic and genetic health and are without any of their claimed benefits, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) believes that it is imperative to adopt the precautionary principle, which is one of the main regulatory tools of the European Union environmental and health policy and serves as a foundation for several international agreements. The most commonly used definition is from the 1992 Rio Declaration that states: “In order to protect the environment, the precautionary approach shall be broadly applied by States according to their capabilities. certainy shall not be used as a reason for postponing cost-effective measures to prevent environmental degradation. ”

The FDA does not test the safety of GMO crops. Instead, all GMO foods are expected to be safe unless there is already evidence to the contrary. The FDA relations on self-reported data from the companies that manufacture the crops as to their safety. Moreover, due to legal and copyright restrictions surrounding GMO patents, independent scientists must ask for the chemical companies' permission before publishing research on their products. As a result, almost all of the long-term animal feeding studies that have ever been manufactured on GMO feed have been transported out by the biotech companies themselves, with their own rules and using their own standards of reporting. What few independent studies have been conducted have shown a range of adverse health effects from reduced fertility to immune system dysfunction, liver failure, obesity and cancer.

The revolving door between big agriculture, the FDA, the USDA and the EPA is also true. In a classic case of revolving door politics, the Obama administration's Deputy Commissioner of Foods, Michael Taylor, refuses to make FDA testing of GMO food safety mandatory. Taylor worked for the FDA from 1976 to 1981, when he went into private practice at a law firm who represented Monsanto, only to return through the revolving door to the FDA in 1991. In 1988 he published an article entitled “The De Minimis Interpretation of the Delany Clause: Legal and Policy Rationale “in the Journal of the American College of Toxicology, which he had previously presented in December 1986 at a symposium on Topics in Risk Analysis, sponsored by International Life Sciences Institute Risk Science Institute, Society for Risk Analysis, and Brookings Institution. The paper was delivered and published during the mid of a debate and litigation over federal agencies' interpretation of the Delaney clause, a part of federal law written in 1958 that on its face, literally prohibits any chemical from being added, in any amount, to food that is processed, if that agent is carcinogenic.

As analytical instrumentation increased in power and more and more agents were found to be carcinogenic at very low levels, the agencies had developed a quantitative risk assessment approach to interpreting the Delaney Clause, which stated that if a carcinogen was present at levels less than 1 in 1,000,000 parts, the risk of that carcinogen was “de minimis” and it could be allowed on the market. In the article, Taylor presented arguments in favor of this approach. Advocates in favor of organic food have criticizedized Taylor for taking this stance and have attributed the stance not to a good faith effort to reasonably regulate, but to an undesired desire to benefit Monsanto financially.

Between 1994 and 1996 Taylor went back through the revolving door to the USDA, where he acted as Administrator of the Food Safety & Inspection Service. During that term he implemented a science-based approach to raising safety standards for meat and poultry production over the protests from industry, which has been called by food safety advocates “a truly heroic accomplishment” (but that was the only one). Between 1996 and 2000, after briefly returning to King & Spalding, he then returned to Monsanto to become Vice President for Public Policy. In 2009, Taylor once again returned to government through the revolving door as Senior Advisor to the FDA Commissioner, and was appointed by President Obama on January 13, 2010 to another newly created post at the FDA, this time as Deputy Commissioner for Foods.

Former EPA head William Ruckelshaus, spent 2 years on Monsanto's board of directors. Linda J. Fisher spent a decade working as Assistant Administrator of the EPA's Office of Pollution Prevention, before leaving to head up Monsanto's lobbying team. Margaret Miller spent her time at Monsanto working on Monsanto's GMO bovine growth hormone and wrote the report on it that was submitted to the FDA before taking a job as Deputy Director of the FDA, where she approved her own report.

In July 2013, the EPA, under the leadership of former Monsanto employees, increased the permitted levels of glyphosate in food, up to 100 ppm in animal feed and 40 ppm in oilseed crops, and from 0.2 ppm to 3 ppm for sweet potatoes, and 5 ppm in carrots (15 and 20 times the prior allowed rates).

The first version of GMO corn was attacked because it was found to be deadly to Monarch butterflies. That corn has been kicked in Poland for where it has been found to be a threat to bees.

Beta carotene producing rice is being pushed in the Philippines, where neighbors near a Bt cornfield have already reported allergy and respiration problems. It is expected to be pushed in India as well. And Indonesia is taking steps to approve GMO corn and soy.

Finally, the world is now suffering from what seven out of ten biologists believe is a sixth mass extinction. The last mass extinction was 65 million years ago when the dinosaurs disappeared from the earth. This mass extinction is being caused by man. The use of non-renewable energy, pollution, deforestation, and the overuse of water and pesticides in agriculture are the primary culprits of what will be man's demise from the destruction of his environment. We will kill off everything that lives on the earth now, but nature will come back, this time without us. But maybe that's a good thing for the planet.

Genome – What You Sequence Isn’t What You Get


Well, is this English? Yes and No. Yes for a layman and No for a geneticist. This is the language of GOD, if such a one exists. These are the alphabets and words that our cells speak. For a organic chemist these are complex molecules made of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen. For an intuitive counselor, these are the effects of the subtle field around us.

Our geneticist have managed to decipher this complex language. Is there a catch though? The effects of this genetic sequence or the human blueprint is what we see in terms of behaviors like blue eyes, black hair etc., This gene expression, which is the term used to describe the effects of the sequence, is not necessarily the same , even for identical twins.

The language geneticist use is 'phenotype' for all external, observable hits of a gene sequence. They use the term 'genotype', for the gene sequence they observe and decrypt. So in other words, the identical genotypes does not guarantee the same phenotype. The reverse is also true. Identical phenotypes does not mean the same genotypes too. Let us see how we can account for this seeming anomaly.

Two persons with the same genotype could be exposed to different environmental conditions which include the diet, weather and the exposure to electromagnetic fields during the course of their stay on earth. Primary reason for the expression being different is the minority field around us.

Popularly called as the Light field, this field is made of photons. The photons are the smallest units of the observable, material world. This L-field is composed of precise details. These details have the capacity to influence the genes and is the reason for the variance of the phenotype.

These L-fields also hold the key to programming our well-being. Someone who has been exposed to poor diet and shanty environment will certainly have his gene expression affected severely. This is a proof that the mixture which is unseen, is indeed the all-powerful.

Can we then create our own reality? Are we really the masters of our own health and destiny? The answer is a resounding 'Yes'. As we journey through this light age which is pushing the frontiers of cellular biology, quantum physics to its limits, we need to take responsibility for our personal fields.

You could have observed that certain places make you squirm with unease. There could be other places which make you peaceful and comfortable. These apply to larger geographies too. The geo-field below us has magnetic qualities that produces good effects and sometimes bad sequences.

So while choosing your environment both physical and personal, exercise care. Your home could be heaven or hell, based on your choices you make. The people in your life with you share your field are important too. Remember they too have a share in your well-being just like you are for others.

Teach Your Children to Become Environmentally Conscious

It is important for every one of us to play a role in protecting, preserving and teaching the next generation how to respect the earth, our environment and all the elements that make up our planet. Most of us are in one way or another environmentally conscious. Many of us recycle, collect bottles instead of tossing them out, use energy efficient appliances, etc. Most of us do these things as second nature, and we have gone one step further by initiating these activities in our communities and most importantly in our homes. We encourage our children to become environmentally conscious, to lead eco-friendly lives and to live with nature as opposed to trying to control it. The most important thing we can do for our planet is to lead the next generation to understand and care about the environment as much as they would care about anything important to them. Let us look at a number of ways that we can engage our children to become the environmental leaders of tomorrow.

Lead by Example

Many families and communities are already doing this. Walk the walk; show children the importance of what you do by not simply talking about it, but by making it common practice in all environments; be a positive role model. Talk about what it means to live an environmentally conscious lifestyle, then work with the entire family Make a plan together – start with small manageable steps that can be quick wins such as recycling, turning lights off, washing clothes in cold water, turning off taps when brushing your teeth, etc. Each one of these pieces of the plan can be accomplished by all members and can make everyone feel successful in this endeavor. Talk about why you as a family is doing this and show how what you are doing makes a difference.

Teach the 3 R's – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Most schools have programs set up to teach children about the 3Rs. In one school, a group of Grade 4's have begun calling them the Waste Warriors. Their goal is to teach other kids in the school how to bring their lunches without a ton of waste – how to teach their parents to use reusable containers, bags, ice packs, etc., and to keep the waste to a minimum. Some of the schools have begun to look at composting as another option to further decrease the lunch waste and protect the environment.

Make a plan to learn about how to reduce waste and save the environment by using reusable shopping bags, lunch boxes and containers when you're out shopping or using old socks, towels, etc., instead of paper towel when cleaning up messes. Turning off the tap water when kids are brushing their teeth is another way to teach them how to reduce usage. Teach the principle of reusing by creating craft projects out of old containers, or purge clutter and give away to others in need. Recycle everything possible – sort cans, paper, cardboard, glass and use blue bags and containers to send items to recycle centers in your communities.


See what environmental groups are in your local area and volunteer as a family to help them out with their cause. Work with groups to plant trees; help organize earth days; join others in cleaning up the parks and green spaces in the spring time.

Scary as it may sound, those findings including such pollutants as herbicides, anti-bacteria, viruses, metals, anti-depressants, pesticides and more. Scientific studies have found that these can cause thyroid disease, endocrine disruption and various types of cancers. They can cause oxidation of your cells, breaking down your immune system, and leaving you vulnerable to disease … scary but true.

You're probably asking yourself right now, is there any good news in all of this?

Sci-Fi Can Show Us What We Should Really Fear

Okay, I'll admit it, I'm a bit of a geek. No, really …

However, just because in Doctor Who, the humans being controlled by the cybermen are fitted with earpieces that look oh-so-much like bluetooth … does not make bluetooth earpieces any less dangerous to your brain. No, the chances of them being used to control your thoughts and program you into betraying the human race is very low. Without the person on the other end is very persuasive … Lol. So no, I'm not talking about you being “upgraded” to a cyberman …

I am talking about the radiation being emitted very close to your head. It's worse for mobile phones, but that did not work with these cool pics.

Seriously, though, if you do need or want to use a mobile phone, please please use the earphones that came with it, or you can buy many cooler ones from computer or hi-fi shops … mine are metallic pink and very cool.

They not only make it clearer and easier to understand what the person on the other end is saying, your neck does not hurt as much, you have hands free for doing things like taking notes, typing, surfing Facebook or petting the cat!

All this with the added bonus that you'll have much less radiation next to your brain. And the brain is a pretty important part of you …

… and while we're on the sci-fi subject, every time I see an ad for those anti-bacterial wipes or automatic soap dispensers, I remember Jeff Wayne's musical the War of the Worlds … I'm listening to the part about the heat ray right now!

Why do anti-bacterial things make me think of Martians? I'm glad you asked … it's because, in this brilliant story, the Martians invaded and dropped the red weed on the planet, smothering us and everything here, and they had these powerful machines that killed us, and we had no recourse , no defense … until the lowly and humble bacterium got to the Martians, that is. Those little things, invisible to our eyes, to which we usually have good immune defences, and in lots of cases, depend upon for our health … they saved us.

So every time I tell a new person what I do, and they think I'm talking about some new antibacterial, I wish I could scream “uuullllllaaaaahhhhh” in the way the Martians do … but I know that I'd probably get locked up, and the poor person would be (justifiably) quite scared. Lol.

We need bacteria. We need to expose ourselves to some of it, to build up our immune systems, so that we do not become like the Martians, unable to cope in a real environment. We need to stop this “magic pill” desperation for antibiotics at the first sign of a cold, too … antibiotics do not do anything at all to viruses (which is what colds and 'flu are). They do help bacteria (the yucky ones) build up an immunity to antibiotics, though.

There's another reason I do not like those ads, too … they never show anyone wiping the poison off the benches before putting food onto them. So we are encouraged to wipe the bench with poison, put food onto it, soaking up the residue, then eat that food …

… and while we're on the subject of automatic soap dispensers … the selling point for these is that you do not need to touch the dispenser with dirty, germy hands, right? Please think for just a moment about what you do after you've touched the soap or dispenser. You wash your hands, right? So you do not need to touch the dispenser with your lovely clean hands, right? You only get your dirty hands on the dispenser before you've washed them, yes? So why do you need one that “senses” your hands so you do not touch it and get dirt or germs on it?

Anyways, that's it for my ravings this morning! I'm just up the bit where the cannons attack the Martian war machine, and it's a good bit !! Uuuuuullllllaaaaahhhhh !!!!!!

Aflatoxin Exposure: Reason for Concern?

I'll admit it. I have not been paying much attention to aflatoxins. Sure, I've seen news clips about them here and there, particularly related to peanut contamination (and rather sensationalized at that), though instead of digging further into the health implications I more or less put my fingers in my ears. “La la la la la.” I mean honestly, like I need one more thing to worry about, especially when it relates to peanuts, the most child friendly food on earth.

But I keep seeing the topic pop up and it's become clear I can not … and should not … ignore it.

What are aflatoxins? Let's consult Wikipedia for a thorough commentary on the topic. “Aflatoxins are naturally occurring mycotoxins that are produced by many species of Aspergillus, a fungus.” They are toxic and “among the most carcinogenic substances known.”

Alright, my fingers are out of my ears. You had me at carcinogenic. Enlighten me, Wikipedia. Where are these fungus friends found? Or more to the point, how in the world do I avoid them?

“Aflatoxin-producing members of Aspergillus are common and widespread in nature.” It appears they can contaminate grains before harvest or during storage and naturally leave in soil and decaying plants. It can, however, invade all types of organic matter when conditions are ideal for its growth, ie moist and warm.

As it relates to food, aflatoxins tend to contaminate some foods more than others. Peanuts, as I mentioned earlier, are a biggy. Peanuts tend to provide favorable conditions for aflatoxin production both during growth and storage (Interestingly, Valencia peanuts appears to be the one variety resistant to mold growth.). Other foods / products include cooking oils, cassava, corn, cotton seed, millet, rice, sunflower seeds, tree nuts, sorghum, wheat and various spices. Aflatoxin-related compounds have even been found in the products of animals who fed on contaminated grains (think eggs, milk, meat).

But rest assured folks. It is not all doom and gloom. We have the FDA, right? Our protector of the food supply surely has knocked this vile microbe out of the food supply. Well, sorta. Like most things harmful to our natural body processes, the FDA has set maximum levels for ingestion. Basically, we can not probably eliminate it without major economic consequences, but we can keep it to a minimum. Not exactly reassuring, but OK. The thing is you can still eat a reasonable amount of aflatoxin-laden foods if you are not eating a varied diet or simply, by some cruel coincidence, happen to love a wide variety of foods that support aflatoxin production exceedingly well.

This then begs the question, what exactly does happen with aflatoxin ingestion? Wiki wiki, what say you?

“High level aflatoxin exposure produces an acute hepatic necrosis, resulting later in cirrhosis, and / or carcinoma of the liver.” So in other words, it's possible your liver will slowly stop working and die. Or get cancer. Maybe both. Seriously?

The good news? “Adult humans have a high tolerance for aflatoxin exposure and rarely succumb to acute aflatoxicosis.” Succumb? You mean die? Well that's good, but still, I'd prefer to avoid exposure altitude if possible and avoid that gray area between sick and succumb.

Also, Andrew Weil has this to say. “The US government tests crops for aflatoxin and does not permit them to be used for human or animal food if they contain levels over 20 parts per billion. of aflatoxin, my colleague Kathleen Johnson, a dietitian here at the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, points out that there has not been an outbreak of liver cancer among US kids, who as you know, consume enormous amounts of peanut butter ( http: //www.drweil.com/drw/u/id/QAA115491 .) Phew, no liver cancer in kids.

What about an increased risk into adulthood? Hard to say, but some studies do indicate that there is a slight increase in risk, especially when there are other liver complications such as Hep B.

What to do? The best we can literally do is limit our exposure as much as possible. Even if we were to grow and process our own food (make our own grains, harvest our own tree nuts, etc) how do we know the fruits of our labor are not somehow contaminated by this prevalent fungus byproduct? We do not, and that's why at least at a very base level I am thankful to have some sort of protection with the FDA. But more to the point, we can limit our ingestion of foods known to be contaminated.

So while initially I was about to throw out every peanut-containing product in my house, I will now take a rational yet still protective approach. This likely means we use less peanut products. We'll make sure that the potentially aflatoxin-contaminated foods that we do eat are stored properly and consumed in a reasonable amount of time. We'll continue to eat a healthy diet, rich in antioxidants, to help ward off illness and naturally detoxify the body. In fact, one article noted this little gem: “Medical research indicates that a regular diet including apiaceous vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, celery and parsley reduces the carcinogenic effects of aflatoxin.” A healthy diet can cover a multitude of sins.

Rather than cause you excessive worry I hope I helped enlighten you about this potentially carcinogenic substance in our food supply. It's just one more reason a healthy diet is so important. Eat well. Exercise daily. Enjoy life.

Pedestrian Day

Most of us today will see petroleum and other conventional energy sources run dry within our lifetime. By the end of the next couple of decades, our current way of life will come to an abrupt end. Our children will see diesel cars only as exhibits. We will then have no option but to revert to employing our physical faculties like our not so distant forefathers.

However, there are changes that we can make in our life style now so that we can keep at bay this dire scenario indefinitely.The conscious steps that we take now will also help us prepare for this eventuality so when it does come, its impact would not be as disorienting and debilitating as it will otherwise be.

The pedestrian Day initiative is of noble intent and eons since, we will have reasons to be proud of the choice we have made now. The little sacrifices that we make, the inconveniences that we take in our stride now and the bluff that we call our detractors will all become matters to celebrate in the near future. In the short run, this initiative will help us offset the great trade imbalances and their accompaniment economic woes that we are just waking up to now. We have the tendency to blindly chase after material indulgences and this decision is a small reality check. Our tiny economy can not afford the endless import of vehicles and the great measures of fuel to keep them running.

The most beneficial effect of this move though is probably the awareness it will create. After our thoughtless existence thus far, we have come to accept a car as a modern day necessity. Being able to walk down the street of our capital with our office stationeries and groceries for home have made us realize how mistaken we were. We realize that we can actually walk the whole distance of Thimphu city, and with much greater joy and relish. Living with this policy change for a couple of weeks, and we realize that personal cars are not so identifiable after all.

It is refreshing to see our colleagues, seniors and the other who's who of our society walk the same path. We realize that walking is such a great leveler. It is a chance for our society to come together and understand each other's situation being at the same level once more. We realize that we have lost so much of our human touch by driving in our shielded SUVs (or utility Nanos, for that matter) without so much as getting a glimpse of each other. We also realize that walking does not make you smaller, especially when everyone else is walking too. It took a policy shock to make us realize this, but it is better late than never.

By default, this initiative has also given the chance for us to seriously consider developing our public transport system, which we stress so much but seldom bother investing in. We realize now that if we had an efficient public transport system, we need not drive our cars for all our small errands. All we need then is a city bus to carry us around in comfort and with efficiency. At the same time, if it is about walking, then there are so much we can do to make our cities pedestrian friendly, not just in spirit but in terms of the physical infrastructures too. All the savings and goodwill support that we will no doubt gain from this gesture will help us do just that.

There will be detractors no doubt. Changes will take time to sink in and be accepted. There will be vested interest arguing for shelving this initiative like all other good thoughts. This move will also give the ideal excuse for the less honest to report late on work. Commercial drivers will look to take advantage of hapless passengers. Traffic officials might get fatigued from listening to the endless streams of complaints. Municipal workers and elected members may come under fire from their electorates. The residents themselves may feel hard pressed under a sense of state domination. No doubt our state at times can be overbearing to the point of snubbing public right on frivolous counts. But this time around, this is not such a scenario.

We can just hope that we have the strength to bear it all and carry through what we all know is a noble initiative. If so, in a few years' time, Pedestrian Day will become a norm rather than an exception, and we will be able to walk through the length and breadth of our city everyday of the week. By then, we will not only have the determination, but also the system in place to facilitate this choice. Our planet and future generation will thank us for our sensitivity, kindness and most importantly, our resolve in a world of spineless masses.
