Earth’s Inner Environment

Our planet has been explored on land, sea, atmosphere and the reaches of Space beyond. All the information earned over the last century has presented us with a complexity that did not exist to this previously previously. We are facing the fact that our explorations and activities have harmedally affected the soil and its vegetation, our waterways, seas and our atmosphere that all suffer as a result. Pristine conditions can not now exist in the state of the natural elements we are familiar with, and even those we have yet to see or discover in the micro spheres.

It would seem that we are proud to have discovered many laws and processes in our natural world but as yet can offer no correction that is satisfactory in curbing the negative effects of our human activity. There is little time to make any correction as it looks Nature itself is in the process of eliminating what we have come to accept as the normal environmental conditions we have enjoyed on our planet. These natural happenings we all know are intensifying. The extreme weather conditions and changes, the floods, tornadoes, earthquakes and volcanic activities all over the planet have increased in number and varying intensities that cause concern to our scientists and naturalists.

It is the last mentioned, that is volcanic activity, that has been of concern confined to those who live in near environments to the active volcanoes but should be of concern to us all. The reason is that we know very little about what is the true nature of the deep interior of our planet and if we are to avoid disturbing the hot magma beneth the thin surface crust we must take further care.

The inner environment of the earth is only comparatively recently explored. We know that the outer crust of our earth is a thin and brittle nature. Then deeper is the mantle and down further, the central core. It is the mantle that occupations the greatest volume and contracts a great deal of concern for that reason. At present the knowledge about its constituents is limited but from the movement of the tectonic plates that have a long history of movement and change, scientists conclude that the mantle material then increases in density down to denser substances. The hot mantle zone is at varying depths from the surface crust and produces the molten magma that rises to the through the outlets of existing volcanoes when an eruption occurs.

Geologists have intensified their studies directly associated with the interior of the core since the more recent cases of earthquakes and volcanic activity through the globe. It seems that one factor of the assessment of the temperature of the innermost core is equivalent to the 6000 degrees on the Sun surface! For most of us, this means very, very, very hot!

As laymen we could have forgiven for wondering how deep drill mining is affecting what is deep down in our planet, as well the underground explosions and nuclear tests we have heard about.

Hopefully scientists can one day insure us that there is no danger of the hot magma increasing to destroy human surface activity. But it is not hopeful, as there are many signs of old volcanoes awakening from dormancy, even the giants such as Krakatau!

Nature will have its way and maybe humans will with urgency change our ways to demonstrate respect for the environment we say we cherish but have seriously harmed.

The Healthy Home Book Review

The Healthy Home book, authored by Dr. Myron Wentz and his son, Dave Wentz, was released in March 2011. This book is focused on one of the most important areas of our lives, our home. At its core, this truth-revealing, book uncovers the hidden household dangers lurking in every area of our home like the living room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, garage, and front / backyard.

As per Dr. Wentz, the book was written to make people aware of the toxic world that we live in, including our homes, and provide simple, yet effective ways to reduce or eliminate the levels of toxins so as to lead healthier lives.

Most people are not aware of the hidden dangers in their homes, the main reason being, they just have not thought about it. What I liked about this book is that it not only uncovers the household dangers which are easy to understand, but gives simple solutions and encourages readers to take baby steps every day rather than being overwhelmed overnight.

So the million dollar question is what are those hidden dangers and how do we go about making our homes safe from toxins, pollutants and hazards? The books covers a whole load of hidden dangers, however, let me highlight some of the more common ones that you need to be aware of:

Fresh Air: whenever possible open those windows and let the fresh air come in and more importantly let the stale trapped air from inside your home get out so we can breathe healthy. Similarly, even on the worst air quality day, the air inside our homes is 5 times more polluted than the air outside.

Water: we need to consume a whole lot of it and therefore, it's essential to ensure that our drinking water is clean and free from toxins. Reverse osmosis is a good way to go about it, as well as other options like distillation and using carbon filters. The other aspect of drinking water, especially when on-the-go, is to use steel containers rather than plastic bottles.

Plastic Storage Containers: most of us use them to store leftover food and for other food storage. Plastic containers are not good to our health because they are leaching toxins in our food, so try to replace them with glass containers instead. One of the most harmful of these toxins is Bisphenol A (BPA) which has found to mimic estrogen.

Personal Care Products: make an effort to reduce the number of personal care products that we use to cover our skin. Most of these products contain parabens and chemical preservatives which are harmful to our bodies. Instead, focus on building healthy skin from within by eating healthy and getting proper nutrition.

Electronic Gadgets: try to reduce our exposure to unnecessary electronic equipments, like wireless devices, which give out radio-frequency or electromagnetic radiations. Keep them away from our bedroom side table so as to aid a good night's rest and reduce our exposure to EMF radiation.

Wear Gloves: when scrubbing the floors, cleaning the washroom, doing any maintenance on your vehicle or working in the backyard. This will help protect our skin from absorbing harmful chemicals and toxins, in case we're using products that contain toxic materials.

As indicated earlier, the Healthy Home book covers a ton of other hidden dangers in various areas of our home. It's important to take the time to understand and learn about these potential dangers as part of living a healthy lifestyle. One final piece of advice is that once you've read the Healthy Home book, you may feel overwhelmed with the amount of change that is required.

The important thing is not to worry, rather, start making small changes every day or on a regular basis. Maybe, you can focus on the most urgent changes first in various rooms, or tackle one room at a time, whatever you feel comfortable with and enjoy the process. Do not make healthy living a program, make it a lifestyle.

Role of Waste Disposal Companies

Every single day, commercial and domestic setups happen to produce a huge amount of waste. Keeping the environment hygienic and clean is important and disposal companies pay a huge role in managing and disposing of the waste that is created on a daily basis. The right waste disposal is extremely important and it needs to be taken care of in urban and rural areas on a regular basis. Without taking care of waste disposal on a regular basis, it can become a dangerous hazard to everyone.

Waste can become harmful if it is not taken care of properly. It does not matter if it's damaged appliances, papers, problem equipment, and house furniture. The environment and healthy of individuals can be affected by all kinds of waste. To eliminate various types of waste, it's important to get help from waste disposal firms to eliminate this waste. The good news is that many high quality waste disposal companies are out there that provide these services to companies and individuals alike. These companies have team members that are trained to deal with waste management and disposal so that people can enjoy an environment that is clean and healthy. Here is a look at just a few of the roles that these companies play in our world today.

Role # 1 – Preserving the Environment
One of the main roles of waste disposal companies is to reserve the environment. The environment should be preserved so that future generations can enjoy it as well. Many waste products release greenhouse gases and other harmful chemicals. However, the pollution that is caused by waste can be reduced with recycling measures. Most waste disposal companies today do recycle waste and items like plastics, paper, and glass are reused to make all new products. This means that less energy is used to make products, which enables natural resources to be preserved for the future.

Role # 2 – Keeping People Healthy
Another of the roles of waste disposal companies is keeping people healthy. If waste products are not disposed in the right way or treated, they have the potential to become a health hazard. The places where waste accumulates over time can become a great place for bacterial and viruses to breed, which can cause disease and sickness. Severe health problems can occur without proper waste disposal, which is why these companies have the role of removing waste and dealing with waste the right way.

Role # 3 – Safe Disposal of Waste
Last, these companies also have the role of safe disposal of waste. The best waste disposal companies use the right procedures to eliminate waste in a safe manner. Safety is important and top companies today make sure they follow safety protocols to ensure that waste is disposed of properly.

It's easy to see that these waste disposal companies definitely have a huge role to play in our environment. They work to preserve the environment, keep people healthy, and to safely deal with all the waste that accumulates over time. Look for quality companies that provide these benefits.

Mold: Can’t Live With ‘Em and You Can’t Live Without ‘Em

That dark damp corner in the basement that has grossed you out ever since you can remember, a substance lurks. What is it? One may ask this question only to be shocked and quite frankly completely disgusted to find the answer is mold. Household molds can grow quickly and can be extremely detrimental to one's health. Mold is essentially a fungus that grows anywhere indoors or outdoors whenever sufficient moisture is present. Here is the crazy part; individually fertile threads can produce hundreds of thousands of spores in four to nine days. As gross as mold is, we still eat it in our foods on a daily basis! Cheese, wine and beer, vinegar, sour cream, smoked meats and fish, and even canned juices contain different types of mold. Not all types of molds can be harmful towards a household but some can be deadly so you should always take precautions.

Mold can grow indoors and outdoors in every type of climate, social and economic condition. Wherever oxygen, moisture, and other chemicals are present mold can and will grow. Indoors mold can be found in damp basements, closets with poor ventilation, and behind baseboards and walls. Mold thrives in bathrooms and kitchens because there is always water present. Usually the mold will grow because the water will soak into the walls or an area will stay damp for an extended period of time. Outdoors mold can grow on dead and dying vegetation. Shady and moist areas, such as rotting logs or leaves are areas that most likely have some type of mold or fungus growing on it.

Because we live with mold (and even consume it) we should be able to know some common types of household mold, whether it is harmful or not, and what it looks like.

The first type of household mold we will be discussing is called Penicillium. This mold is an allergenic and it can cause many diseases in humans. Commonly found in soil, food, or decaying food materials. Another place it can be spotted is in the air conditioning system living in the dust, the spores spread around the house whenever you turn the system on. Scary to think that a mold could spread through your house in less than one week. This mold when it is large enough to be seen shows up in white circular patches. Sometimes when it is found on food it can be green or the traditional white color.

Cladosporium is a powdery substance that can be black or a darker green color. It can grow on food, dead plants, paint, and fiberglass air ducts. This has multiple effects on humans such as nail fungus, asthma, pulmonary conditions, and skin rashes in humans.

Memmoniella is another common household mold. This is usually found on cotton, paper and wood products. In the supports for your house or on a chair that has been rotting away in the garage is a particularly place for this bugger to grow. Memmoniella can develop toxins that can be very harmful to humans and animals. It is also found alongside the next mold in our lineup, Stachybotrys.

Stachybotrys is probably one of the more disgusting looking molds on this list. It is black, patchy, and slimy. Sometimes has a furry nature to it as well. This repulsive mold can be really bad for humans. It has been known for causing cancer, asthma, and severe headaches. Commonly found in the back of walls and under ceilings similar to Memmoniella.

Mucor is a mold that a lot of us with dogs or cats are familiar with. This mold commonly grows in soil and is found on animal droppings. It looks a lot like hair and is white in color. People with weak immune systems can easily develop lung infections if they are exposed to this type of mold for a long period of time.

Alternaria like Penicillium is an allergenic mold. It is usually found on plants and in soils. Some of the effects include asthmatic reactions, hay fever, and various other allergies. If found in food it looks can be black, it also erodes the food it is on. On plants the leaves turn brown in small circular places, and sometimes have large holes in them.

Molds have an important positive role in nature but have some extreme effects upon humans and animals when in the wrong place. Having some knowledge about common types of molds, what they look like, and what their effects are can greatly reduce the impact that mold can have on your house and your health.

Is There Any Protective Value in Using Tissue Seat Covers on Toilets?

When you go into a stall in a public restroom, do you automatically pull one of those tissue seat covers out of its container and meticulously make sure that all the seat is covered? Or if there are no paper covers, do you assume “the situation” because you do not want any part of you to touch the seat? Most of us do this, because we grow up being told of the germs that lurk on the seats of public toilets just waiting to claim us as their next victim. It really does seem like a hassle to go to in order to use the toilet, but the necessity has been ingrained into us almost from birth. Have you ever wondered, though, if those seat covers are really providing you with any protection?

Doctors will be the first to tell you that it's okay to go ahead and sit down without using a tissue cover. That's because germs that cause STDs do not survive living on toilet seats. Just think about it. How many people do you know who have actually been infected from sitting on a toilet seat? The inventor of those paper covers was a really clever moneymaker in that all he's made his millions selling all these years is peace of mind. You can go ahead and keep using one if it makes you feel better, but you really are not accomplishing anything by doing so. Yes, thousands of bare behinds have sat on that same seat, but there's nothing contagious about any of them.

Medical professionals say that there are far greater dangers in public restrooms than the toilet seats. Anywhere that lots of people touch, such as door handles, faucets, and stall locks, are sure to be loaded with germs. This is one of the reasons that modern restrooms have features such as walk-in hallways that do not require opening any doors and motion-sensitive flushing and water faucets that you do not have to touch to operate. These devices were designed to help eliminate sanitation problems in public restrooms.

There was an interesting study conducted at the University of Arizona. In that case, microbiologists conducted examinations comparing the bacteria on telephone receivers to those on toilet seats. They found that the average receiver contained 25,000 bacteria per square inch. Toilet seats, on the other hand, only had 49 bacteria in the same amount of space. Amazing statistics, yet how often have you ever put a protective paper cover over a phone's receiver?

What It Means To Be Green

The term “green” seems to be everywhere now a days and it is used by just about every type of company in the world. One of the tools that is recognized as a gauge for things green is the Life Cycle Assessment. For all products that are manufactured the life cycle starts with the raw materials, goes through different manufacturing processes and then the finished product is shipped to the consumer. This is a very simplified explanation but is the basis for figuring out how green a product is.

All balm manufacturing companies should feel that “green” is the only way to go! In fact it should be all the balm company's mantra that “being green” is the only way to go.

All of the raw materials that are used in balms should be 100% natural such as the beeswax, shea butters, carrier oils and essential oils. The proper processing of most of these ingredients is extremely energy efficient and the waste which consists of leaves, flowers, and roots is typically reprocessed as organic fertilizer. Not only that but the production of many of these oils actually help people around the world.

There are cooperative cottage industries all over the world that are owned by local people who produce these oils and butters and beeswax. Not large corporations but ordinary people make this happen on a local level. What a great concept!

Once all these raw materials are processed they are usually beloved or placed into containers of some type and shipped to our production facility. The beeswax, butters and carrier oils need to be heated and then the essential oils are added last. The balm mixture is then stirred, poured, room cooled, sealed and boxed for shipment.

The tin containers which most qualified balm companies use should be certified lead free that we use have been designed to be recycled as knick-knack containers that can be used over and over. Once the balm has been used up the container will remain as a great place to put your stuff in.

This is what green is all about! Another facet of the green process is the imprinting of the tin which means we do not use glue and paper for the labels that you will find on many skin product containers and in keeping with our eco-friendly corporate policy the lithographic inks are also lead free.

When you use any our balms, all of the balm in the recyclable container is rubbed onto your skin or smoothed on your lips leaving no residue and no carbon footprint. Most balm products represent the ultimate in a green life cycle.

Do You Really Want To Know Where To Buy Alkaline Drinking Water?

If you're wondering where to buy alkaline drinking water, you need some help. The information in this article will provide the help you need.

Water's alkalinity or acidity has become a hot topic lately. The popularity of the topic will likely fade as time goes by, but some people will remember what they have learned.

The big issue is that chemicals like chlorine and other contaminants change the pH level of naturally occurring freshwater. The treatment processes used by many public facilities have an effect too.

What is responsible for the pH level of freshwater? Assuming that no additives are present, it is dissolved minerals and elements that are responsible.
For example, in some areas, the calcium content of freshwater is relatively high. In a few cases, it is actually too high. People refer to it as “hard” water.

Calcium is an essential mineral. We need it for strong healthy bones and for other purposes. Researchers have found that the naturally occurring mineral content of some freshwater supplies helps to prevent nutritional deficiencies in populations that live in the areas.

So, while you might now be wondering where to buy alkaline drinking water, in years past, the quest was for mineral water. You have likely seen it in your local grocery store. The pH level variants, but it is usually around 8.

Reverse osmosis and other purification methods remove naturally occurring minerals. Distillation has the same effect. The pH level of the liquid will drop to around 6.5 when minerals are removed, but if the liquid is left in an oxygenated environment, the pH level will start to rise again.

Nature likes balance. The rise in pH is due to nature trying to neutralize the acidic environment.

The new process (which has many people talking and wondering where to buy alkaline drinking water) is not reverse osmosis or distillation. It is not a mineralization process, neither is it a purification process. It is called ionization.

Ionization can only work if minerals are present. If your home is serviced by a public treatment facility, minerals may not be present.

The process of ionization involves running an electrical current through a liquid. If minerals are present, the electrical charge changes the magnetic poles of the minerals. If no minerals are present, nothing happens. So, home ionizers are actually a waste of money.

Instead of searching for where to buy alkaline drinking water, you would be better off searching for a good home water purifier .

Some of the better systems will remove chemicals, exchange metallic particles for potassium or other minerals and balance the pH level. And that's what you really want.

Specific areas of the house which are usually left lightly wet like bathrooms and kitchens must be well ventilated. Knowing air to move about a damp room would help dry up the moisture, hence protecting the room from being infected by molds. Do not allow leftovers to be kept inside your refrigerator for a long time.

Control Outdoor Molds

Do not disregard the exterior part of your house. If you have sprinklers make sure that the water flow is directed away from your house and does not reach the walls. Consider the level of the ground. Be sure there are no areas which are significantly lower than the others because this could lead water to settle there for a period of time. Always check the gutters if the flow of the water is not being blocked by anything. Dispose decaying organic material found in your yard at once.

Clean Molds

Make sure the room is well ventilated before you begin. Open windows and doors to provide fresh air. If the area infested by molds is just small, it is easier to clean. Just use detergent and water. It would be better to apply a bleach solution to the infected area to kill mold spores that may still be present on it. When using bleach, avoid mixing it with other cleaning products because this could create fumes that may be harmful to your respiratory system. Protect yourself with gloves and eye gears when cleaning. You may also wear mask to prevent yourself from inhaling contaminated air. Drinking Water Hoaxes Revealed

Read this particular comment before you consider paying for your drinking water or getting water ionizers to get alkaline water.

Would not everything turn out to be nice to avoid harming us with contaminated or bad drinking h2o? Or are all of us even harming ourselves with the water we ingest? I do not think most people would say that every body has water in their homes that looks, smells or tastes wholesome. I, for one, grew up on a mountain and had a deep well. There was simply no one harming our water and it was clean and chilly when it came out of the faucet and tasted great. Other places I have shared a home the water was chlorinated or high in iron and had that flavoring that just was not proper. I would absolutely love to be equipped to simply turn on the water tap and get a hold of the water that I can completely imagine about.

Whether it's curing many cancers with magnets or holistic wonder-remedies or anything else, we've all seen the incredible boasts people make about their health products and about how your whole life will be transformed. I can express to you straight away that 90% are scams. You may possibly even have fallen prey to some of these cons, providing you the latest trend. Some of these could possibly be wonderful for you but it never stopped to stun me. Do you recall bee pollen, barley grass, shark cartilage, antler velvet and a whole variety of other “health and wellness” pills?

Now when it comes to water how many types are there out? How about distilled, reverse osmosis, chaga, UV treated, IRF treated, charcoal block, etc? I've bought so many kinds of drinking water, I can not recall. Finally, after many disappointments I got sick and tired of it all. I decided to get to the bottom of this interest we all have to make sure that our most basic nutrient – water – will not make us ill.

I checked out countless business websites and a number of university and governmental websites; and I was dismayed at what I routinely found:

– Old info or info repeated from other websites
– Wild and incredible statements
– No investigation
– No refunds, etc.

(I already knew that any of us could not trust our tap water due to the fact of the existence of up to 2000 pollutants.)

Specifically, I found:

a) Bottled water: a real mish-mash of craftsmanship, sometimes no more than filtered tap water sold at costly mark-ups.

b) Reverse-Osmosis and Distilled Water: avoid avoided the medical proof of the risks in the ongoing drinking of water that is void of minerals, acid in nature, and oxidizing.

I immediately realized that these solutions were either pointless, too cost or perhaps detrimental long-term. And the vendors were grinning all the way to the bank.

Having said that I was able to locate products that were well-researched and legitimate: water ionizers and certain water filters. I found two websites providing comparison reviews of various water purification systems with scientific investigation. They really made it simpler for me make decisions about the water that my home would drink. Each of us should be appreciative about water and do our research until we are fully satisfied. I do not forget the very first time I was introduced to alkaline water. It really taught me to be think that an element that my body is 70% formed from and my brain 90% should be something that I always make sure I acquire the most beneficial quality attainable.

The Dangers of Molds

Molds may be just tiny organizations but they are capable to cause mild to serious health problems. Individuals, however, vary on how much they are affected when exposed to molds. Some molds produce mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are irritants, allergens, and toxic chemical substances produced by molds. Vulnerable people can become seriously ill when exposed to these.

Allergic Reactions

There had already been a lot of researchers conducted which hold that allergies are commonly associated with molds. An allergy is a negative reaction of one's immune system to something that does not affect most other people at all. Usually, a person who has an allergy to one specific thing could also be allergic to some other things. There are several substances present in the environment we live in that could bring about allergic reactions. Examples of these are dust, food, fumes, stings, pills and even mold spores. Allergic reactions could have been in the form of having a runny nose, rashes, swollen body parts, itches, repeated sneezes or asthma. Symptoms actually vary. Allergies usually make you feel very uncomfortable but are not usually fatal. However, studies proved that anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction which could actually endanger lives. Even people who do not have allergies could have been adversely affected when exposed to high concentration of mycotoxins. Other examples of allergic reactions associated to molds and mildews are nasal congestion, fatigue, hay fever, throat irritation, respiratory problems, and sensitivity to light.

Mold Irritant Symptoms

One of the most common problems explained about by exposure to molds are the mold allergy symptoms. But this is not always the case. Exposure to molds could cause illnesses not accompanied by allergic reactions. Aside from irritants and toxic responses, molds could also cause infections. These infections thought about by molds can be the source of many other illnesses like pneumonia, flu and skin infections. An irritant reaction can have similar symptoms to an allergic reaction. Take note that the difference between the two is that symptoms of allergies become worse with each repeated exposure while the intensity of irritant reactions stay the same even when several repeated exposure. Mold exposure can cause irritations to both people who are allergic to it and those who are not. Cleanliness should be observed in every house because loose mold particles that settle on different items in the house could be inhaled by people or even animals that lived there.

For sensitive people, a simple contact or inhalation of even the tiniest mold or mold spores could cause asthma attack. Anyone who is allergic to molds should avoid having contact with them. It is in fact alarming to know that when people with asthma are exposed to high amounts molds it could lead to death. Taking this in mind, homes with mold problems should be addressed as soon as possible.

Effects on the Body Systems

The mycotoxins produced by toxic molds produce harmful air in the environment which could be very hazardous to men. When this air is inhaled it damages the body's myelin. Myelin is an important substance in our bodies that covers the nerves. Toxic air depletes myelin thus exposing the nerves without protection. This would lead to the nerves' failure to function correctly. When this happens, other essential components of the body, including the immune system, the nervous system, the respiratory, the skin, and the gastrointestinal system would also malfunction. Children could be poor victims of neurological problems like this since their brains and other organs of their body are not yet fully developed.

Mycotoxins are poisonous substances produced by certain molds. They are commonly found in grain and nut crops. They may also be present in some fruits and vegetables. Mycotoxins could bring about damage by chemical reactions. They are invisible and deadly. One distinct characteristic of mycotoxins is that they continue to do damages in feeds and hay even when the molds that produce them is no longer present. There are many of them and scientists are continuously discovering new ones.

Aflatoxin is a poison caused by fungi in or on foods and feeds. A great damage brought about this poison is the cause of cancer. This poison is created by molds which are commonly present in cereal grains and legumes. Among the mycotoxins, aflatoxin is the most popular. There had been many researchers done to forget the dangers of this poison. In fact, various diseases which are related to aflatoxin have already been named. One of these is the aflatoxicosis which damage different living creatures. Many countries nowdays control exposure to aflatoxin by monitoring different traded products that may contain Aflatoxin.

Cat Litters

Having a litter box is an evil necessity with indoor cats. When I had my first cat there was only one toilet in the house, and I was not going to wait in line behind the cat, so I did not potty train my cat. Now I have three “garage cats” sharing two litter boxes. My saga, my search for the “best” cat litter solution began long before today.

Years ago I was stuck by how heavily perfumed litter was when my cat jumped in my lap and started washing her feet. Phew! It occurred to me that if I was smelling it that strongly just from what was on her paws that she must be ingesting some nasty chemicals. I already did not like the dust factor of cat litter. My quest for a better litter began.

I've already returned the clay cat litter when the clumping cat litter – aka scoopable cat litter – came along. Based on what friends offered and stores sold I've tried Fresh Step, Tidy Cats, Litter Purffect, Sweat Scoop, Yesterday's News, and Feline Pine being among my long list of efforts.

There are additional concerns, beyond the scent – as if that was not bad enough – with traditional clumping litter. I've said at various times if there are warning signs on a product it's one to be avoided. I was a bit slower on this topic because the big RED warning signs were missing. The hint was to not flush litter down the toilet. Why, might you ask? Because clumping litter expands to fifteen times it's size; that plugs sewer lines, or septic tanks. It impacts cats too, in the same way. It has other negative effects on cats too. What are we doing to our cats?!?!?

A “sample” I tested at Sam's Club during one shopping visit was for Fresh Step with Odor Eliminating Carbon, a clumping litter that encapsulated the odors. They had put crushed, fresh garlic in the litter and I could not smell it or any perfume; I was sold. I'm guessing now that the sample was old because the freshly opened bucket was heavily perfumed, though it did mask the cat box odors. But my search continued because of the perfume and the heavy dust.

Cutting to the chase, I have settled on a mixture of three different cat litters. I like the low-scent, low dusting, and high action of the mixture. My recipe is equal-ish parts of:

  • Litter Clean (an all natural hard clumping, herbal odor control from Sam's Club)
  • World's Best Cat Litter (of whole kernel corn, with odor control from Petco)
  • Nature's Miracle (odor control, lifting cat litter of corncob granules with pine scent and enzymes, also from Petco)

The combination of these three litter brands / styles controls the odor created by three cats sharing a litter box, has minimal dust generated by their use and my daily scooping, and is minimally perfumed. Best yet, the cats like it, unlike so many of the cat litters I've tried through the years.

My cats were several years old when I really started playing with non-traditional cat litter products. They did not like the experiments I foisted on them. They seem to only like the texture of granules. My recipe looks to satisfify their preferences, and mine.

Do yourself and your cats a favor, find a better solution than what you probably are using. There are better scoopable cat litters out there than what's primarily available on the store shelves.

Buying Organic Produce

Years ago I saw a list of fruits and vegetables you should buy organic because the non-organic items had heavier pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and miscellaneous additives (like sewer sludge). I was not swayed by that list then because the organic items in our stores were so much more expensive than the non-organic options. Today, that is a different story for me.

Today I figure I can help myself be eating the cleanest fruits and vegetables possible, without growing them myself. If I select the organic “dirty dozen”, as determined by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) every year, and eat the balance of my fruits and vegetables (or color nutrition pyramid), I can reduce my pesticide intake from 10 pesticides / day to 2 pesticides / day. I like that reduction!

If I'm choosing organic or natural meats so that I can avoid feed lot “poison”, then I should avoid fruits and vegetables for the same reason. Spinach and lettuce are two crops closely associated with feed lot “poisons”. Remember the people who got sick and / or died from eating spinach with e coli? That's the same e coli that causes illnesses / deaths associated with some meats. It all comes from unnatural meat production. Read Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma, and watch or read Food.Inc for a more detailed and graphical explanation of what I'm talking about.

The foods on the “worst” list are evaluated only with the part of the fruit or vegetable most commonly consumed (peels removed and after washing); which have the worst pesticide residue. Here's the fruit and vegetable list of the worst offenders.

  • celery
  • peaches
  • strawberries
  • apples
  • nectarines
  • bell peppers
  • apricots
  • imported grapes
  • spinach
  • kale
  • cherries
  • potatoes
  • leafy greens
  • carrots
  • pears

Other lists I've seen also include:

  • green beans
  • sweet potatoes
  • raspberries
  • chili peppers

Fortunately, there's a list of foods you do not have to buy organically.

  • pineapple
  • onion
  • plantain
  • avocado
  • corn
  • mango
  • watermelon
  • pineapple
  • plum
  • asparagus
  • sweet peas
  • kiwi
  • cabbage
  • eggplant
  • papaya
  • cauliflower
  • broccoli

Lists, being what they are, can be confusing, especially when an item is included on opposing or contradictory lists. Here are some I found on both the must buy organic and the either way list.

  • blueberries
  • grapes
  • tomato

It's my theory, now that I'm seeing the problems associated with eating heavily “chemaled” produce that these items appearing on both lists should be treated as “dangerous” and then purchased from the organic section of the produce aisle.

Additionally, those these do not fall into the “fruit and vegetable” category, they do fall into the “brown and white” category, and are in the group of foods raised with heavy doses of chemicals. Strive for organic beef / chicken / pork, coffee (both in the brown food group), milk / cheese / butter (the white food group) to round out your approach to healthy eating.

My Bigger Half and I eat more carefully than we used to, and are enjoying it. When guests rave about the great tasting salad or meat dish, it adds to our already strong pleasure of eating foods with minimal to no chemicals. We are happy eaters and enjoying lots of wonderful organic produce.
