What is SLS?

SLS is a chemical named Sodium laureth sulfate, or sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES), it is a detergent found in many personal care products and even some household cleaners (soaps, shampoo, toothpaste, mouthwash, shaving cream, mascara, skin cleanser, moisturiser, bubble-bath, washing-up liquid, laundry detergent, carpet cleaner, degreasing car engines etc).

Why is SLS in our products?

SLS is a popular ingredient in shampoos and the other products mentioned above for two main reasons, the first is it's low cost to produce, this makes it ideal for low cost brands. Secondly, it is a very effective foam agent, which makes it highly effective in the removal of oily stains and residues.

What effects does using SLS have?

With regular, prolonged use of shampoos containing SLS, scalp irritation and tangled, split hair can often occur. It has also been reported to have other undesirable effects on skin and the environment. In several cases, these effects can include swelling of the hands, face and arms.

If being applied directly to the skin through a body wash or moisturizer the SLS within the product acts as it does when degreasing a car engine- it dissolves the essential oils in the skin, these oils are vital in keeping skin supple and moisturised. It has been well documented that SLS dries out the proteins in the skins cells, causing irritation in the form of rashes and itching as well as opening up the lower, more sensitive layers of skin to other environmental contaminants.

Even more alarmingly, when SLS has been used in highly concentrated quantities applied to the skin the health implications become more serious. Studies have been carried out discovering SLS can mimic the activity of the hormone oestrogen. Recycling in homes and offices is growing, and that is a good thing. The majority of households recycle in some way. However, buying recycled products is lagging behind. The good news is today there are many great quality green office supply options that will let you do good work while helping our Mother Earth. Bath Fans and Poor Ventilation Equal Attic Mold

Throughout the year, attic ventilation is critical element in maintaining attic temperatures. In the summertime, vents help remove excess heat. In the wintertime, air vents prevent the excess moisture from building up and water condensation from accumulating due to the temperature differences between the attic and the floor directly below.

Aside from an actual leak in your roof, the winter months are the time when moisture can lead to the growth of attic mold. During cold weather, warm air from the house can escape to the cold attic area. When warm air meets the cold surface of the roof boards of the floor below, ice crystals and water droplets can form. This moist environment, combined with a food source comprised of wood creates the perfect conditions for attic mold infestation and wood rot.

This problem can be compounded by bathroom exhaust fans that vent directly into the attic or into the soffit areas rather than outside the house. Moisture from bathroom fans is often the source of the attic mold contamination.

A balanced ventilation system is important. Incoming and outgoing air should be equal within the attic. It is important that bathroom fans are insulated around the exiting vent pipe. This helps to prevent moisture from condensing within the pipe – and creating another potential haven for mold to grow.

One of the most common ventilation mistakes is when homeowners combine different ventilation systems. This may occur when incoming air enters into the attic through soffits in the underside of the roof overhang. When these are combined with a different type of exhaust ventilation, problems can occur. For example, combining a ridge vent and a box vent can cause the ridge vent to draft moisture-laden air from the box vent. This can cause a cycle of attic moisture accumulation that can lead to significant damage. Mold releases enzymes that can rot and destroy wood. Exposure to mold can cause a wide range of potential health problems.

There is usually some level of saturated moisture in your attic. This is usually due to extreme temperature differences between the air temperature outside and the interior attic temperature. If large black or colored areas of mold appear in the attic, it should be inspected by a professional. If mold does exist, it can be treated and removed in a way that will prevent future growth.

Getting removing attic mold is important, preventing it in the first place is even more important. Your home's bathroom ventilation and air exhaust should be designed to put moisture as far out and away from your home as possible -no matter the time of year!

Pseudomonas: A Potent Microbe – A Potent-Ial Environmental Player

When Pathologists mention the word “Pseudomonas”, either orly or in written reports, one would tend to panic, owing to its extreme virulence to human health. Strains of this Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterial species could be so potent, that they may be resistant to almost all the therapeutic strategies employed against it. P.aeruginosa is the most frequently isolated strain of Pseudomonads in the clinical laboratory, particularly in those of hospitals, as they are the number one cause of hospital-based infections, or Nosocomial Infections, this stem from the fact that it may require a simple nutritional medium for growth. It may also normally inhabit soil, water, vegetation, as well as decaying organic matter. • Hazardous crude oil compounds (ie benzene, toluene, xylene, naphthalene)
• Some polynuclear aromatics
• Some pesticides (ie malathion)
• Coal compounds (ie phenols and cyanide in coal tars and coke waste)
• Some industrial solvents (ie acetone)
• Others: ethers; simple alcohol such as methanol, methylethylketone; ethylene glycol

Who knew that a pathogen as potent to humans as Pseudomonas could actually be isolated for environmental use? Whether to rescue plants from various opportunistic pathogens, or to clean spills, pollutants, and other contaminations, Pseudomonads are provided to be appropriate environmental alternatives to several techniques implemented for the same roles. I wonder what other challenges these microbes could take on. They're already surprising enough!
