The Dangers of Isopropyl Alcohol

As we've discussed in a previous post, there are many advantages of using isopropyl alcohol in the manufacturing process, but what we did not cover is some of the risks and dangers of IPA. Today we'll cover some of those issues so that you can take full advantage of isopropyl's benefits while mitigating the hazards of this potentially dangerous liquid.

The first thing I think of when I think of the dangers of isopropyl alcohol is its flammability. Isopropyl alcohol is highly flammable and can easily ignite. Vapors may form explosive mixtures with air, traveling to a source of ignition and flash back, and use of water spray to fight fires may be inefficient. Isopropyl alcohol should be kept away from heat, sparks, flames and other sources of ignition, as well as strong oxidizers, acetaldehyde, chlorine, ethylene oxide, acids and isocyanates. A flammable safety cabinet is the best storage option.

Another danger of using isopropyl alcohol is poisoning. IPA poisoning occurs when the liver is no longer able to manage the amount of IPA in the body. Your body can handle small amounts of isopropyl alcohol. In fact, your kidneys remove approximately 20 to 50 percent of IPA from your body. The rest is broken down into acetone by enzymes known as alcohol dehydrogenases. This acetone is filtered out of your body through the lungs or kidneys.

Isopropyl alcohol can enter the body three ways: ingestion, inhalation, and absorption.

The first way is most direct, and easiest to avoid. Since ingesting IPA causes rapid inoxication, people sometimes drink it when conventional alcohol is unavailable, or as a means of suicide. ingesting isopropyl alcohol has an immediate effect on the central nervous system, which controls the involuntary actions of the body, including heartbeat, breathing and gag reflex. Isopropyl alcohol slows these functions and may shut them down altogether. IPA is so strong that it can induce hypothermia and consequent cardiac arrest. The blood's thinning also causes blood sugar levels to fall so sharply that seizures may result.

Limiting access to large amounts of IPA can deter people from misusing the product in this way. IPA should always be kept in a container clearly marked, preferably with a GHS label. It should never be kept anywhere or in anything that might be mistaken for consumption, for example in a water bottle, or near where food is prepared or consumed.

Isopropyl alcohol inhalation occurs anytime you are around an open container, although working with reasonable amounts of IPA is generally safe, it can cause headaches. Inhaling large amounts of isopropyl alcohol can cause nausea, vomiting, irritation of the nose and mucous membranes, throat irritations, and even difficulty with breathing as coughing can occur making it difficult for you to catch your breath.

If breathing is impaired for an extended period of time and there is trouble getting enough oxygen into the bloodstream, you can become dizzy and even lose consciousness and require resuscitation. Always use IPA in a well ventilated area and utilize proper safety equipment in the event of a spill. If someone experiences breathing problems, the individual should immediately be removed and placed into fresh air. If the person's breathing is still impeded, call 911 immediately.

Isopropyl alcohol is readily absorbed through the skin, so spilling large amounts of IPA on the skin may cause incidental poisoning. Small amounts of IPA on the skin is generally not dangerous, but repeated skin exposure can cause itching, redness, rash, drying, and cracking. Prolonged skin contact may cause corrosion. Always wash thoroughly with soap and water when contact with IPA occurs, and always use safety equipment when dealing with large amounts of IPA.

Some of the effects of IPA poisoning are as follows:

Dizziness
Low blood pressure
Stomach pain
Nausea
Rapid heart rate, or tachycardia
Low body temperature
Slurred speech
Slow breathing
Vomiting
Unresponsive reflexes
Throat pain or burning
Seizure
Coma

If you experience any of these symptoms after exposure to IPA, or if you see symptoms in another, the first step is to remove yourself or the individual from further exposure and place them in a fresh air environment. If symptoms persist, immediately seek medical attention.

Further treatment depends on the amount of exposure and the type of exposure. When isopropyl alcohol has been ingested, individuals who are conscious and not convulsing should drink one to two glasses of water to dilute the chemical. Do not admit vomiting, as the chemical can be aspirated into the lungs causing further damage. A medical professional may use laxatives and activated charcoal to clear stomach contents.

In the event of inhalation exposure, the individual should be moved into the open air. If fresh air does not improve symptoms, medical help should be called to provide respiratory support, along with oxygen and fluids when high-level inhalation exposure has occurred.

When contact with the skin has occurred, the affected skin should be flooded with water and then gently and thoroughly washed with soap and water. In the event of a large spill in contact with skin, wash and monitor for signs of poisoning, seek medical treatment if symptoms appear.

If the affected individual is wearing contact lenses, they need to be removed. The eyes should then be flushed with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes or longer if necessary, lifting the upper and lower lids occasionally.

This post is not intended to scare anyone, or deter people from using isopropyl alcohol in their manufacturing process, but to encourage awareness and safety practices that can prevent accidents from occurring. The more informed users are of the dangers of products, the easier it is to maintain safety. When using IPA in a workplace, make sure all of the employees are trained in the proper use of isopropyl alcohol, have access to safety equipment, and understand the symptoms of poisoning so that they can recognize it in themselves or others.

You're not alone. In fact, a lot of people have a problem with the taste and odors in their drinking water.

I've worked for three different water plants and only one did not have a problem with taste and odors (although it does now).

The reason for bad tastes and odors in drinking water varies. For water plants that get their water from lakes, streams, rivers etc cause two big causes are rejected vegetation and algae. Industrial wastes and agricultural runoff can also produce taste and odor.

For plants that get their water from wells the issue is usually due to dissolved minerals and gasses. For instance, iron and zinc can give an objectionable taste and hydrogen sulfide can produce a rotten egg smell.

Long story made short … near all water plants will have a problem with taste and odor at some time. The real question is, what can you do about it?

Great question … I'm glad you asked.

There are a number of solutions that can provide great tasting odor free water. Some work better than others. And some are more expensive than others. I will give you a breakdown of some of the devices you can get starting from least expensive to most expensive.

Note: I am omitting bottled water as it is the most expensive solution in the long run.

With ANY water filter designed for removing taste and odor it must have activated carbon in the filter.

Filtered Water Pitcher : These are relatively inexpensive and they can come as powered filters and standard filters. Powered filters will deliver water faster than non-powered ones.

Point of Use Filters : These filters can fit on either the end of the faucet or under the sink. These can be less expensive that a filtered water pitcher, but they can also be much more expensive. Point of use filters can also remove other toxins in the water depending on the type of filter you get.

You can also get a point of use filter for your showerhead.

Whole house filters: While point of use filters can be less expensive in the beginning, you could end up spending a lot of money on individual filters and having to deal with changing the filters. If you do not want to bother with all of that, you can get a whole house filter device. These connect to the main water line coming into the home.

Reverse Osmosis: These are more expensive devices that provide almost pure water. A reverse osmosis device will strip out most of the toxins. Reverse osmosis units come as point of use up to whole house and beyond.

Distillers: A distillation unit will also provide almost pure water.They generate pure water in batches. You can get them in capacities of one gallon up to 12 gallons. Of course, the greater the capacity the more expensive the units will be.

How to Remove Hardness From Water

There are two kinds of water softeners on the market.

The most common is a salt-based water softener. This type of softener actually removes the minerals that cause hardness and replace them with sodium. They give the water a slick feeling and you will notice your soap producing more lather. Since the minerals have been removed your skin will not feel dry and your laundry will be brighter. You will also notice you do not have scale and soap scum buildup.

Because a salt-based softener uses salt to soften the water, you will need to regenerate the softener periodically. This is an automatic process, but you will be required to add salt to your softener as needed.

Two things to consider when getting a salt-based system. First, just know there will be an ungoing expense for salt as long as you are using it. Second, you will be adding sodium to your water. If the hardness of your water is 15 grains per gallon you would consume about 30 mg of sodium per 8 ounce glass of water.

There are also salt-free water “softeners”

These units do not remove hardness-causing minerals, they convert them to crystals, but the minerals remain in the water. These crystals will not attach to surfaces to form a scale. Note: Since they do not actually remove the minerals they are really water conditioners. You still get the advantage of reduced scale without adding any salt. In fact, salt-free water conditioners are basically maintenance free and while some can go for 3 to 5 years without replacing the media others never need to have it replaced.

One other important point to make about water softeners is they only deal with the hardness in the water. They do not remove any contaminants of any kind. If you are wanting to remove hardness and chlorine, fluoride etc. you will need some sort of combination if treatment devices.

The Human Tragedy and What Awaits Us

News reports from several countries on various continents show famine is growing. In some South American cities people are lining up for hand-outs as crops fail, rain does not arrive, and the hydro-electricity supplies cease. On the Indian sub-continent there is a similar story where people are desperate for food and in Africa people are also starving to death. There is a price for changing the balance of trees and removing essential rain-forests – but that's not the only problem.

In countries where major food bowls exist, such as Australia, prolonged daught in many parts is slowing production of food and driving prices up. The rush by countries like China to buy productive farm land in this and other countries is a sign of things to come.

During the mid-1980's the Spirit wave me visions on a continuous scale that showed this time. Not only famine but huge fires, floods, and other catastrophes that made me cry out in pain as they played out. Disease; wars; climate change; global warming; and various other disasters are just the tip of the iceberg as people rush to survive. Food shortage is one thing but when water dries up there is nothing left.

The question is how do we escape what is coming, and how do we put right what is already here? The short answers to these questions is we can not do either. This is our only home and the desperation is not man-made but a deliverance from God. If it was not in the plan then it would not have been possible for me to see it in visions of the future.

My reincarnation happened with power and a link to the Spirit of the Universe. Environmental issues are harmful or bad effects of human activity on biophysical environment. Environmental issues arise mainly through voluntary actions of humans. We are going to discuss some of the human actions which are causing issues to the environment. These include: Industrialization, Hydrology, Nutrient Pollution, Overgrazing, and Overpopulation.

Industrialization

The Industrial revolution begin in Britain and spread to the rest of countries. It has a great impact on human Society. It has changed the overall dynamics of human species. I has also a great impact on the environment, with the increase in Industries it boosting air pollution which include Carbon dioxide, which is the main agent responsible for the depletion of ozone layer (O3). With the depletion of ozone layer it allows Harmful rays to hit surface of earth. These rays cause a lot of skin problems

Hydrological

Hydrology is the scientific study of the distribution, movement, quality of water on the planet. Scientists have found out that due to use of different pesticides and chemical causes damages to the overall quality of water because of which human health is at risk because 70% of our body is composed of water. Blood contain 90% of water. Other hydrological hazards Includes flood, Drought, Coastal erosion etc.

Overpopulation

Overpopulation has been a growing concern for the world. It is creating a lot of problems for the human species, and many of the Environmental issues can be linked with overpopulation such as loss of fresh water, lower life expectancy in fast growing countries or should I say third world countries India, Pakistan, Bangladesh . Depletion of natural resources means few resources are chased by many people which will cause competition among humans and extremely will increase crimes.

Overgrazing

Overgrazing is herb ivory (animal consumption of plants) which extract the unsustainable yield of floral biomass from an ecosystem. Overgrazing occurs when plants are exposed to grazing for a longer period of time. It causes environmental problems such as soil erosion, land degradation and loss of useful species. Soil gets eroded when the cover of vegetation almost gets removed from the land and exposed to the strong wind, rainfall.

Nutrient Pollution

Nutrient pollution is the process where too many nutrients are added to water mainly phosphorus, and nitrogen as a fertilizer. This is then responsible for excessive growth of Algae. The harmful effect of nutrient pollution includes Acid rain, Air pollution, and direct exposure to algae.

Acid rain: Acid rain is caused by nutrient pollution in the air. Acid rain is very dangerous and when it happens it destroys lakes, streams, Forest, Grassland.

Direct exposure to algae: Harmful algae blooms in water produces toxins which kill fish and many more aquatic animals. It is not only their toxins that affect aquatic life. Even if they do not produce toxins they can harm aquatic animals by blocking sunlight from them.

In order to preserve the natural beauty of our environment we must refrain from those activities which causes environmental issues. It is important to become actively involved in helping to enhance our environment with everyday solutions to our daily activities. Do I Require a Water Softener and Will It Take Some Important Minerals Away?

Let's understand how a water softener goes about its job. A standard softener works on the ion exchange technique. It causes an exchange of calcium & magnesium ions with sodium chloride.

A typical softener arrangement will have a couple of tanks; one containing beads called resin tank and the other containing salts called the brine tank. The raw water goes through the resin tank in which the mineral ions bond with the negatively charged beads. The beads then absorb the minerals and release sodium. This way, the water sheds calcium and magnesium and attains a softer form.

The purpose of the brine tank is to regenerate the functionality of the system because with the passage of softening cycles, the beads lose their effectiveness. 3 Major Pollution Problems

Pollution refers to the process of making land, water and air dirty and makes it not safe and suitable to use. With the increase in world population the pollution is increasing day by day at an alarming pace. Pollution can mainly be divided into three types: air pollution, water pollution, and soil pollution. We are going to discuss them with the problems associated with them.

Air pollution air is composed primarily of Carbon dioxide, Nitrogen, and Oxygen. About 99% of the air is made of nitrogen, oxygen and inert gases. Air pollution occurs when the composition of the air is disturbed by adding different things to it which not normally there. Common type of them is that particle which happens as a result of burning the fuel and those particles goes up in the air causing air pollution.

Another common type of air pollution is because of dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide, CFC (chloral flora carbon), Sulfur dioxide, Nitrogen oxide and other chemical vapors.

CFC which is usually present in the compressor of the refrigerator is mainly responsible for the depletion of ozone layer. Ozone layer is made of O 3 and whenever the CFC goes up a reaction takes place between O 3 and CFC which break the layer of O 3 causing its depletion. Now this has a very dangerous effect on humans it causes skin diseases and many other such problems, because harmful rays from sun directly strike the human body. A recent study has shown that about 2 million people died each year because of air pollution. This amount is very alarming.

Soil pollution or land pollution is referring to the condition when garbage's and industrial wastes are thrown without proper recycling. According to ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY American producers about 250 tons of garbage and only 34% of which is recycled and the remaining are left for landfill. Especially in the developing countries where there is no proper system for disposal of wastes it really causes life threatening diseases eg measles and diarrhea. Leaving garbage on the land are very helpful in the spread of bacteria, virus, and fungi causing many diseases. Garbage must be handled properly by recycling them in order to protect the land from getting polluted.

Water pollution occurs when different materials from different sources are added or entered into water such as different chemicals, sewage, certain metals like lead and mercury; fertilizers from agriculture runoff and are the main contributing factors of water pollution. Water pollution is a worldwide problem. According to the United Nations, 783 million people do not have access to clean water, and around 2.5 billion people do not have proper sanitation. This amount of pollution severely effects marine life. Water is very necessary for life. Life can not exist without water. The human body consists of 70% water. Knowing this important information we realize water must not be polluted because polluted water causes a lot of diseases, such as diarrhea, constipation. Polluted water will not just cause human diseases, but it also makes life difficult for marine life.

Purify Your Water for Drinking With These Simple Techniques

Your life may depend on these simple and inexpensive techniques. You can apply them when you are not sure of the source of the water or in cases of emergency.

The World Health Organization reports that waterborne diseases account for an estimated 4.1% of the total daily global burden of disease, and causes about 1.8 million human deaths annually. It estimates that 88% of that burden is attributable to unsafe water supply, sanitation and hygiene.

As we all know, It is not enough for water to appear clean. Clean – looking water may contain harmful viruses or bacteria lurking in them. So to make it ideal for drinking, you need to 1. Clean as well as 2. Purify your water before drinking. Note that the regular filters only filter dirt which is not the same as purifying water.

1. You Start by making your water Clean – when your supply is obviously dirty, cloudy or colored.

In cleaning your water, start by washing your containers with soap. This is important because the container you are using for storage may be contaminated, which makes your water unsafe.

Next, make a filter by putting a fine-mesh nylon stocking inside a clean white sock, and slowly pour the water into it. As you do so keep the sock-filter from coming into contact with the cleaned water, and make sure that the dirty water does not overflow from the filter. You should repeat this process until your water looks clean enough.

2. The next thing to do is to purify your cleaned water

The best purification method is by boiling. Let it be at a rolling boil of at least 1 minute. Then let it cool off before drinking

Another method is to use chlorine or bleach. It is important that you know about this because sometimes you may not have enough or any kerosene to carry out the process of boiling, which makes it undesirable.

After adding bleach, stir the water thoroughly in order to mix the bleach with the water and let it sit for 30 minutes. You should be able to detect the smell of chlorine after the waiting period.

Do not use photographed bleach for purification. Bleaches which contain additional cleaners or other additives, should not be used to purifying drinking water.

There are other simple methods of purification you can apply at home. This includes the use of Iodine, Hydrogen Peroxide or wine. However, boiling or a filter designed for a higher level of purification, is required to eliminate 'Crypto' which is a common microscopic parasite that causes diarrhea.

Fluoride: What’s the Big Deal?

They put fluoride in the drinking water. They put fluoride in toothpaste. They put fluoride in mouthwash. The dentist gives you a fluoride treatment after cleaning your teeth.

Why all that fluoride?

More importantly, is it really a good thing?

Those are great questions … I'm glad you asked.

First, a little boring history. I promise it will not take long. Once upon a time, a dentist traveled to a city in Colorado to set up his practice. He noticed that all of the local born people had terrible brown stains on their teeth originally called “Colorado Brown Stain”, but later called fluorosis. He also noticed that those same people had little to no decay in the form of cavities.

After considering study (like 30 years), this dentist finally found the compound that was responsible.

Fluoride!

By now he had help from other dentists. They started analyzing water from around the country. What they discovered was the children whose water supply had only one part per million (ppm) of fluoride had fewer cavities. They also did not have the “Colorado Brown Stain” condition.

To prove their findings on a large scale required a test city. The city was Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 1945, Grand Rapids started fluoridating their water. After an 11 year study, in which 30,000 children were examined, the results showed a 60 percent drop in cavities in school age children.

There's the proof … What's the problem?

In a lot of people's minds, the problem is that the government was essentially mass medicating its citizens. Fluoridation is really only effective on children. So, millions of adults are being getting fluoride for no reason.

Recently, there have been countries that have stopped adding fluoride to their drinking water. In New Zealand for example, 12 years after discontinuing fluoridation there was an actual improvement in cavity incidents.

The other problem is, the source of fluoride used in drinking water is the fertilizer industry. There is a negative feeling associated with that connection to the water people drink.

The solution: If you do not want fluoride in your water … get rid of it!

How do you get rid of fluoride?

The simple answer is with a filter designed to do just that. Of course, you will not get a filter that just removes fluoride. It will remove a whole lot of other bad stuff too. These filters come in a wide variety. You can get something as simple as a water pitcher all the way to a whole house filtration system.

You can also purchase a distillation unit that will provide you with virtually pure water. A distillation unit will bring the water to a boil. Then it will capture the steam and cool it back down into a liquid. The water then goes through an activated carbon filter. You will have pure, refreshing water to drink.
